Chicago-area law firm Meltzer, Purtill & Stelle (MPS Law) is pleased to announce two new partners: Steven H. Goodman as capital partner, and J.L. Cherwin Jr. as income partner.
The move will further strengthen the firm’s ability to provide high-quality commercial real estate legal services to financial institutions, real estate developers, and the corporate, industrial, and retail real estate markets.
“We are excited to announce Steven and Jay as partners in our firm,” said William J. Mitchell, managing partner of MPS Law. “Their experience, expertise, and commitment to our clients is unparalleled, and we look forward to their continued success.”
Goodman, who joined the firm in 2012 as an income partner, is an expert in several areas of real estate law, including the acquisition and development of both raw land and partially improved but distressed subdivisions, as well as evaluating and solving problems relating to homeowner associations and covenants. Before joining the firm, he served as Vice President and General Counsel of the Chicago division of a national homebuilder that was also a client of MPS Law. He received his J.D. from Northwestern University and he served on the Board of the Lake County Homebuilders Association.
As capital partner, Goodman hopes to help facilitate and maintain MPS Law’s legacy as one of Chicago’s top real estate firms. “First and foremost, our goal is to take care of our clients and create sustained success for them by providing practical, efficient and effective legal services,” Goodman said. “As a former client of the firm, I know firsthand that this approach defines the culture of MPS Law, and sets a higher bar for how our attorneys practice law.”
Cherwin, who joined the firm in 2016, focuses primarily on commercial real estate, including commercial estate leasing, real estate acquisitions and sales, land use and development, real estate and commercial/industrial lending, and mergers and acquisitions. In addition to his prior law firm experience, he has held strategy and brand management roles for a Fortune 500 industrial company and served as in-house counsel to a publicly-traded REIT. He received his J.D. from the University of Kansas and his LL.M. in real estate from the John Marshall School of Law. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute, the Arlington Heights Plan Commission and Redevelopment Commission, and the Schaumburg Business Association.
“I enjoy coming to work at MPS Law every day,” Cherwin said. “It’s a great culture, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. As partner, I will continue to focus primarily on commercial real estate, mid-market corporate transactions and commercial lending.”
